This month Infometrics is excited to launch our Population Projections service to support better informed planning for the future. With this launch in mind, we’ve focussed on population and demographic issues in the October 2022 newsletter.
First up, Senior Economist Nick Brunsdon examines the latest subnational population estimates released earlier this week, finding slower population growth across most regions, with evolving population trends as international net migration remains negative and regional migration changes.
In our latest media release, Nick outlines what the new Population Projections offer, and how the projected sustained slowdown of local population growth means that regions will have to rethink how they plan for the future.
Looking ahead, the population changes already underway have massive economic consequences. As Nick’s third article (!) this month details, the drivers of population growth are shifting as the population ages, forcing an assessment of future workforces.
Stepping back from population for a moment, earlier this month we also published our latest economic, building, and transport quarterly forecasts to clients. Chief Forecaster Gareth Kiernan outlines some of the forecasts in our media release, noting how the fight against inflation will require higher interest rates, and will stunt economic growth over the next two years.
Finally (and back to population), Principal Economist Brad Olsen profiles the changes over time to how local populations rank in our Chart of the Month, with some fast movers up the ranks over the last 26 years.
